Naples-Sarzana, 6 August 2025 – Intermarine S.p.A. (a subsidiary of the Immsi industrial group – IMS.MI) has delivered the new High-Speed Craft (HSC) SNAV POLARIS to SNAV shipping company (MSC Group). A latest-generation ferry with a low environmental impact, the SNAV POLARIS will be used to increase crossings in the Gulf of Naples.
Designed by the Intermarine research centre in Messina, with a length of 58.20 metres like its sister SNAV SIRIUS, which was delivered in July last year, the SNAV POLARIS embodies the best of Italian naval engineering as the result of years of research and application of cutting-edge industrial technologies. Designed to offer a safe and comfortable travel experience, the SNAV POLARIS is an example of forward-thinking modernity in maritime transport, a model of innovation, efficiency and sustainability.
Reducing environmental impact and improving customer services have always been important goals for SNAV and the MSC Group. With the SNAV POLARIS, the company not only guarantees a significant increase in services for both residents and the tourists who visit the Gulf of Naples every year, but also confirms its commitment to the progressive elimination of carbon emissions as a tangible expression of the Group’s attention to critical environmental issues for a more sustainable and green future.
With the delivery of the second High-Speed Craft, Intermarine confirms its leadership in the construction of hi-tech, low environmental impact vessels. The project for the construction of the SNAV SIRIUS and the SNAV POLARIS exploits the synergy between two companies that have decided to bring innovation, technology, comfort and safety to maritime transport. A technically complex development, which, with today’s delivery of the SNAV POLARIS, sees the two companies proudly projecting themselves into the future, improving the travel experience and safeguarding the beauty of Italian seas. Special attention was also paid to the needs of people with reduced mobility, as both ferries comply with the Ministry's latest “PRM” standards and regulations.
The SNAV POLARIS is a renewed confirmation of Intermarine’s intention to maintain its presence in the passenger ferry segment, an important achievement for the Messina area, where it continues to contribute to the socio-economic growth of Southern Italy.
Vessel characteristics:
A product of the Intermarine research centre in Messina and built with the latest construction techniques, the SNAV POLARIS represents the cutting edge in technology, design and safety. Like the SNAV SIRIUS, it is a benchmark in marine transport, delivering the highest quality in comfort, performance and safety.
Built entirely in lightweight aluminium like its sister SNAV SIRIUS, which has already been in service in the Gulf of Naples for a year, the SNAV POLARIS is equipped with a propulsion system consisting of 4 engines and 3 IMO III type-approved generators (Marpol Convention) for electronic combustion control, fitted with a selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system for significant emissions reduction. The engines and the generators can also be powered with biofuel, whose use contributes to a well-to-wake carbon emissions reduction of up to 90%. The boat also features a cold ironing dock socket for shore-to-ship energy supply, and can accommodate a hybrid propulsion system for zero-emission port entry and exit manoeuvres. It is propelled by 4 Kongsberg Kamewa 71S4 hydro jets with a remote electronic control system, which ensure a significant reduction in noise levels both in the water and in the air and improved manoeuvrability. For optimal hydrodynamics in terms of speed and fuel consumption, the SNAV POLARIS is equipped with a 4-fin stabilisation system and an interceptor system for trim correction in relation to loading conditions.
